The staff and board of directors of the Peninsula SPCA invite you to join us on our journey to becoming an Adoption Guarantee Organization. As an Adoption Guarantee Organization, we commit to save all the healthy and treatable animals under our care, and reserve euthanasia only for unhealthy and untreatable animals.
Our vision for the future allows us to remain true to our mission to advocate and provide for the humane care and welfare of all animals. We are committed to finding a loving home for every orphaned pet on the Virginia Peninsula.
The Peninsula SPCA has historically served both as a municipal pound and an adoption center. The board of directors recently adopted a strategic plan which eliminates the use of SPCA facilities and services for animal control purposes by July 2013, and allows a greater focus on our mission. By definition, an animal shelter functions for the prevention of cruelty to animals through community outreach and education, and by finding permanent adoptive homes for animals. In contrast, a pound is mandated by state law to impound, or harbor seized, stray, homeless, abandoned, or unwanted animals for a specified period of time.
Richmond, Chicago, San Francisco and many other communities across the nation have used these same principles to save the lives of animals. Working in partnership with their local pounds, and with the help of the community, they have seen their live release rates more than double.
This transformation is indeed a journey. The success of an Adoption Guarantee philosophy is contingent upon the partnership of all animal organizations and the community, and not simply by ending the killing of adoptable animals within one organization. In a model community, no healthy adoptable animals will be killed simply because there is a lack of cage space or as a means of animal control.
By working together, treating each life as precious, we can truly transform our community.
We have taken the first step on this journey with the decision to become an Adoption Guarantee model. The road is long and we need your support to reach our final destination.
