Thank you for considering the adoption option! We have many different types of animals available for adoption who are waiting to find loving homes. We shelter puppies, dogs, kittens, cats, guinea pigs, bunnies, hamsters, birds, ferrets ... and all of them want to meet you!

See our adoptable pets on Petfinder.com!

Step 1: Gather the required forms of identification.
All adoptions require a picture ID (driver's license, military ID, or official state ID).

Step 2: Select your pet*.
Our staff wants to help you find the pet that is just right for you and your lifestyle. Since your new pet will be with you for many years, this is an important commitment that should not be rushed into! Please visit our shelter to see what pets are currently waiting for a home. We will discuss your needs and help you determine which type of animal would be the best match.

Step 3: Your pet will be neutered and you can redeem your voucher for a free vet exam!
In the unlikely event the animal has not been altered, it would remain at the shelter until surgery takes place and we will schedule you a pick up time.

Next, your new pet will want to meet her new veterinarian! Veterinarians from the Peninsula Veterinary Association donate a free exam for every animal adopted from the Peninsula SPCA. This examination is an excellent chance to ask specific questions about integrating your new pet with your existing pets and family members, what type of food to choose, and to get a more in depth view of your pet's health and age- or breed-related needs.

If you are adopting a large dog that requires a premise check you are required to undergo the check prior to adoption.

Types of dogs that generally require a premise check include, but are not limited to: Chow Chows, Pit Bulls (including mixes), Akitas, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Shar Pei's, and American Bull dog. Please be advised that although this list represents most of the dogs requiring a premise check, we MUST rely on the judgement of the Adoption Counselors and he/she may require a premise check for other types of dogs depending on the circumstances. This is a very important issue and we appreciate your cooperation and understanding!

Basic Requirements:

  • Safe and healthy environment
  • Live in our jurisdiction (Newports News, Hampton, York County, and Poquoson)
    * If you live outside of our jurisdication, you will need to check with your animal control and see if they will provide this service for you. Animal control will need to fax our shelter the outcome of the premise check.
  • Current state/federal pictured ID. (Drivers license/Military ID)
  • $50 deposit (cash only) will be applied to the adoption if the premise check passes. If it doesn't pass this will be a donation to the shelter to help our animals.
  • A fenced in yard is preferred but not madatory on all dogs.
  • A home visit will be scheduled within 48 hours
  • You have checked with you home owners insurance or have landlord approval.
  • If you currently have a pit bull or pit mix and you want to adopt a pit or pit mix you will need to bring your pet to the shelter for a one to one meeting with the dog you want to adopt. If any signs of aggression are observed from either dog the adoption will not be able to be processed.
