The Mission of the Peninsula SPCA is to advocate and provide for the humane
care and welfare of animals. We are committed to finding a loving home for
every orphaned pet in our community.

The first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was organized in England in 1824, primarily to prevent carriage horse abuse in the days before automobiles. Horses were driven through freezing cold winters and stiflingly hot summers, often with little food, water or rest. The carriage drivers were only interested in making as much money as they could, and would beat the horses if they refused to or were unable to pull the carriages.
The SPCA helped to pass laws regulating the carriage horse business, and the Society expanded to include dogs and other animals in its fight against cruelty. The first American SPCA was started in 1866 in New York. There are now SPCA's all over the US - and indeed, all over the world. Each is a separate entity, incorporated within its state, city, country or province, and decides its own policies and procedures.
The Peninsula SPCA was established in 1963. We are located on J. Clyde Morris Blvd in Newport News, Virginia. The Peninsula SPCA is the sole provider for homeless animals on the Peninsula including Newport News, Hampton, York, and Poquoson municipalities.
The SPCA opened its first clinic summer of 2007. The primary purpose of the clinic was to ensure that every animal adopted from the Peninsula SPCA was neutered prior to being released to their new families. This commitment to prevention is vital to stemming the tide of homeless animals on the Peninsula. We have altered more than 3,000 animals since the clinic opened.
The Peninsula SPCA houses all of the stray or abandoned animals that are picked up by the local Animal Control. We accept thousands of homeless animals every year regardless of age, health, temperament, or species. The state law requires stray animals without
identification to be held for 5 days, before they become the property of the SPCA, and are eligible for adoption.
